In our daily lives, we often face “giants”—it could be a toxic boss, a legal battle, or a terrifying health diagnosis. During these moments, the heart trembles. Surah An-Nisa, Ayat 84 was revealed for exactly this purpose: to remind us that no matter how strong the “enemy” appears, Allah’s grip is tighter.
The Holy Verse: Arabic, Transliteration, and Translations
Transliteration:
Faqatil fee sabilillahi la tukallafu illa nafsaka wa harridhil-mu’mineena ‘asallahu ay-yakuffa ba’salladhina kafaru. Wallahu ashaddu basan wa ashaddu tankila.
English Translation (Sahih International):
“So fight, [O Muhammad], in the cause of Allah; you are not held responsible except for yourself. And encourage the believers [to join you] that perhaps Allah will restrain the [military] might of those who disbelieve. And Allah is greater in might and stronger in [exemplary] punishment.“
Urdu Translation:
“پس (اے نبی ﷺ) آپ اللہ کی راہ میں لڑئیے، آپ اپنی ذات کے سوا کسی اور کے ذمہ دار نہیں ہیں، اور مومنوں کو (جہاد پر) ابھارئیے، قریب ہے کہ اللہ کافروں کی طاقت کو توڑ دے۔ اور اللہ کی پکڑ سب سے زیادہ سخت اور اس کی سزا سب سے زیادہ عبرتناک ہے۔“
Deep Linguistic Analysis
To understand why this verse is a “wazifa” for victory, we must break down the key terms:
| Arabic Word | Root Meaning | Deep Insight |
| Ashaddu | Sh-D-D | Means more intense, firmer, or harder. It implies a strength that cannot be broken. |
| Ba’san | B-A-S | Refers to courage in battle, physical force, or military might. |
| Tankila | N-K-L | An exemplary punishment that serves as a warning (deterrent) to others. |
The Human Connection: When we say Allah is Ashaddu Basan, we are acknowledging that while the world has “power,” Allah has “Absolute Power.” It shifts our fear from the creation to the Creator.
Spiritual Benefits & The “Victory” Wazifa
Scholars and spiritual mentors often recommend this portion of the verse for those feeling oppressed or facing an overwhelming enemy.
Benefits:
- Removes Fear: Reciting this verse helps replace the “dread” of people with the “awe” of Allah.
- Psychological Strength: It reminds you that you are only responsible for your effort, while the result (the “restraining” of the enemy) is in Allah’s hands.
- Protection: It acts as a shield against those who use their power to bully or harm the weak.
Recommended Wazifa:
For those facing legal troubles, enemies, or severe opposition, many spiritual elders suggest:
- Recite Durood Sharif 11 times.
- Recite the last part of the verse: “Wallahu ashaddu basan wa ashaddu tankila” 313 times.
- Pray with a firm heart, asking Allah to restrain the harm of the oppressors.
- End with Durood Sharif 11 times.
The Secrets of “Minor Badr”
To understand why Allah revealed “Wallahu ashaddu basan,” we have to look at a moment of extreme psychological warfare. After the Battle of Uhud, the leader of the Quraish, Abu Sufyan, challenged the Prophet (ﷺ) to a rematch at Badr one year later.
The Atmosphere of Fear
When the time came, the Muslims were going through a period of drought and poverty. Abu Sufyan, sensing a chance to break the Muslims’ spirit without fighting, sent a man named Nu’aym ibn Mas’ud to Medina. His mission? To spread “Fake News.”
Nu’aym told the Muslims: “The Quraish have gathered an army such as the world has never seen! You are walking into your destruction.”
The “Deep Strategy” of the Prophet (ﷺ)
This is where Surah An-Nisa, Ayat 84 becomes a masterclass in leadership. While the people were terrified, Allah commanded the Prophet (ﷺ):
“So fight in the cause of Allah; you are not held responsible except for yourself…”
Basically, Allah told His Messenger: “Even if no one follows you, you go. My power is more intense than their propaganda.”
| Event Aspect | The Enemy’s Propaganda | The Divine Reality (Ayat 84) |
| Army Size | “Unbeatable and massive” | Allah is Ashaddu Basan (Stronger) |
| Outcome | “Certain death for Muslims” | Allah is Ashaddu Tankila (The Ultimate Deterrent) |
| Psychology | Spread of Khawf (Fear) | Spread of Tawakkul (Trust) |
What Happened Next?
Inspired by this verse, the Prophet (ﷺ) marched to Badr with 1,500 companions. When Abu Sufyan heard that the Muslims were not intimidated by his “psychological warfare,” fear entered his heart. He turned his massive army back to Mecca without a single drop of blood being shed.
This is the ultimate “Tankila” (Deterrence). Allah defeated the enemy’s heart before they even reached the battlefield.
Deep Insights for the Modern Reader
1. The “Fake News” of Shaitan
Just as Nu’aym spread rumors to scare the Sahaba, Shaitan and the “oppressors” of today use the media, social pressure, and financial threats to make you feel small. This verse is your spiritual armor. It tells you: “The news report might say they are strong, but Allah says He is stronger.”
2. Personal Responsibility
The phrase “La tukallafu illa nafsaka” (You are not responsible except for yourself) is a life-changing concept. It means you shouldn’t wait for a “crowd” to do the right thing. Stand up alone if you have to. When you take the first step, Allah’s Basan (Might) covers your back.
3. The Power of “Asa” (Perhaps)
In this verse, Allah says “Asallahu” (Perhaps Allah will restrain…). In Quranic Arabic, when Allah uses the word “perhaps,” it is actually a guarantee. It is a way of saying: “It is very easy for Me to stop them; just show Me your sincerity.”
Final Reflection: Finding Peace in His Power
We live in a world that worships strength—money, armies, and social status. But this verse is a divine “reality check.” If you are standing on the side of truth, you are never truly “weak.”
As an intermediate seeker on this path, I have found that the moment I stop looking at the “might” of my problems and start looking at the Ashaddu Basan (Intense Might) of my Lord, the problems don’t just feel smaller—they actually begin to dissolve.
FAQs:
It is a command to the Prophet (PBUH) to stay firm in his mission even if he is alone. It promises that Allah will restrain the power of the disbelievers because His power is superior.
It is best recited when you feel intimidated by someone’s power, when facing an enemy, or when you need a boost of spiritual courage.
Tankila means a punishment so severe and public that it prevents others from committing the same crime. It is “exemplary deterrent.”
